Summer Update: "Newspapers and Technology" and more

Submitted by mhbppr on Tue, 07/15/2008 - 17:30

Summer has come to Rochester and things are heating up for the OPL. We have five full time student researchers working on a number of projects, tackling everything from Open Journals to making Wiki's and blogs print friendly.

In the next few weeks we're looking forward to rolling out an exciting new resource for people who want to get started with self publishing.

And most exciting, our Innovation News Platform has been featured in the July issue of Newspapers & Technology. The article profiles our successful test of the i-News at May's Imagine RIT Innovation Festival. You can read the article here.

Speaking of the i-News, there is a new beta release of the i-News module available at drupal.org. If you're interested in setting up your own web-to-print newspaper using Drupal, take a look at this project.

Summer Kicks Off in High Gear

The OPL's summer has officially begun. Students and faculty are continuing their research and development over the course of the summer. The Open Publishing Guide is becoming more concrete as research is being done, and comparisons between online self-publishing websites has continued. Online Wiki development is being researched with our own Graphic Media majors and Software developers. We are continuing to look into The Public Knowledge Project and are thinking of ways to incorporate Open Journal Systems into the OPL. We are also researching mobile technologies to see how smart phones can be worked into the mix. Check back soon for more updates. Our students are working hard in conjunction with faculty here at RIT and we are proud to kick off our Summer with a great start.

The OPL Releases its first Drupal Module

Edit Content, the first content management module from our upcoming Innovation News Install Profile, is now available to download in beta from the Drupal Website. This marks the first open source release by the Lab.

Edit Content lists content by edit status and provides an "edit" link for each piece of content. When used with the forthcoming Innovation News install profile, it will allow for simplified team collaboration and will integrate with other aspects of the system to provide necessary tools for users with "Editor" status.

Our goal is to have the the complete Innovation News Install Profile available for download later this summer. The profile allows "one-click" integration of our Innovation News modules and themes into an Drupal 6.x installation.
